Source: www.security.nl Not a single cyber crime solved by South Goa cops | Margao: While cyber crimes have seen a steady rise in South Goa, the police have been unable to crack a single case, thereby failing to ensure a sense of deterrence to prevent such crimes. The inefficiency of the police in investigating cyber crimes is evident from the number of unsolved cases registered in Salcete alone.Recently, Bhupal Shivkumar, a resident of Gogol, Margao, lodged a complaint with the Margao town police stating that he was duped of Rs 4.5lakh after he received an email announcing that he was a winner of a bumper prize of Rs 45.2 lakh in a competition organized by a media group. Acting on his complaint, the police booked an offence under Sections 66 of the IT Act and 420 of the IPC against three accused - Zuber Shaikh, Sachin Upadhyay and Nitin Goswami, all residents of Delhi. On May 21, Fr Cruz Alexandre Fernandes, a priest of Navelim church, lodged a complaint with the Margao police stating that he was duped into parting with an amount of Rs 48,500 by a caller who identified himself as a priest calling from Rome. The caller, identifying himself as Fr Henry Joseph, had offered to transfer Rs 80,000 to Fernandes\' bank account. While Fernandes could retain half the amount for his personal use, the rest should be used for Church activities, the caller had said. He had then asked Fernandes to deposit some money in his bank account and to provide him with his bank account details so that he could proceed with the fund transfer formalities. Once Fernandes obliged the caller, he received another two calls by the same caller, promising Rs 1.45 lakh and Rs 1.20 lakh. He then asked Fernandes to deposit Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 so as to facilitate the funds transfer. The priest was duped of Rs 48,500, and based on his complaint, the Margao town police had booked an offence against Henry Joseph under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. Though investigations had tracked the call to Kolkata, the police have failed to nab the accused so far. | http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/City/Goa/Not-a-single-cyber-crime-solved-by-South-Goa-cops/articleshow/40311719.cms | 16-08-2014 | timesofindia.indiatimes.com
